Before Christmas, I made a present for a friend… Whilst visiting her home a few weeks previously, I spotted that a tea towel I’d made her was sitting on top of the Kenwood Chef (food mixer) in the kitchen. I thought I’d try my hand at creating for her something that my Mum had made for me. – A cover for it! (Using the same fabric as I had for the tea towel so that it matches. 🙂 )
For Christmas
Using the one I’ve got as a reference point, I made a template, made sure it fitted and hey presto! It was done in a few hours. When wrapping the present I thought… Rather than save the template (which I’d cut out of old wrapping paper I had from my birthday) and saving it in my little file, that I’d use it as wrapping paper to wrap the gift up in. I thought it unlikely I’d be making another Kenwood cover.
So I gave it away & it was enjoyed and now utilised. And now… Guess what my Mum would like for her upcoming birthday?! You guessed it – a cover for her Kenwood Chef! The cover she’s got at the moment predates both me and my brother, as the machine was a wedding present and I think she made the cover for it soon after.
So, off I go to measure up again… I did swipe her old one over Christmas to start a new template for it, but wasn’t thinking right and haven’t allowed for the seam allowance. So need to figure out how to make that first before cutting out the fabric, sewing up and the rest. Stay tuned!
– I’ve decided to use greaseproof paper for my template and am going to add a half inch seam allowance all round the sides, but an inch for the bottom part. Wish me well…
– And I’ve finally finished it. It took me much longer than expected, including some unpicking. I think it will definitely fit the machine but is a bit roomy. Hopefully it will be good enough though and maybe my Mum can alter it if she desires!!
In its new home
Whilst doing the unpicking and re-thinking about making it work, it reminded me of one of those life lessons that if something doesn’t quite work out, or if you fail at something first time, don’t just give up. Keep going, or try a different way and you will get there! Doesn’t stop the frustration halfway through, though 😉 .
